Collecting Old
post cards.
I collect a variety
of old postcards, most of which are places I am familiar with.
This page has two postcard images and may take a minute or so to
load. These post cards were scanned to a graphic file. The main
theme of release is Lowell, Vermont, however, at the bottom of
the page I have placed links to several others.

of town history )
Main
Street
I have a number of postcards from
around the turn of the century. This post card contains a few
interesting items. The
building in the forefront is a Funeral home at the time this
photo was taken. In later years it was a General Store owned by
the Poutre family. The store was sold to the drapers sometime in
the 70's and the building burned in the 80's. Notice the horse and wagon in the lower
left. Above this you can notice power lines. In the lower left corner you will notice
stack of shingles. There was a mill on the river just out of the
picture. The caption shows
Main Street, Lowell Vermont. There are not allot of streets in
this small town. This picture was taken at the bottom of
schoolhouse hill on Route 58 facing Northwest.
Hotel
The below postcard is taken facing
east at the top of schoolhouse hill. This hotel in the background
was located at the intersection of Route 100 and route 58. Route
58 runs in front of the building and Route 100 is to left off the
picture. In the foreground is a bandstand which is still there.
Unfortunately the hotel is not. This was burned down by a
suspicious fire around the early/mid 70's.
Additional postcards of
Lowell, Vermont. (Most of these were taken in the same time
period as the ones above)
Looking
north down schoolhouse hill.
- This postcard shows a
Model-T and a horse and buggy coming up the hill. Notice
the intersection at the bottom of the hill. This is the
intersection where the Main Street picture was taken
from. Most of the buildings in this photo are still
standing, but not all.
Shilby
and Co. Mill
- There was much debate
between family and friends about where this mill was
located. The general consensus was on Route 58 on the
right just leaving town. There is evidence of a
foundation at the site and the house across the road is
still standing. There was no recollection on what the
product was.
Creamery
- This was taken facing east.
The creamery was built the river which runs through the
town. This is no longer present, my uncle has built a
small power plant in it's place. This building was
destroyed before my time and I am not sure what happened
to it. Could have burned, washed out by a flood, or torn
down.
Hazens
Notch
- In the background you will
notice the steep change in elevation which is known as
Hazens Notch. This is where the famous Hazen-Baily road
terminated on it's way to Canada during the revolutionary
war. This picture was taken on Route 58 facing north.
Additional postcards of some
towns in the surrounding area.

school building in Orleans, Vermont. This was mailed and
post marked on November 10, 1910 from Orleans to Newport,
Vermont.

of the Barton National Bank and Post Office in Barton,
Vermont. The postcard was mailed from Barton on May 7,
1907 to Montpelier, Vermont.

- This postcard is of the is
of the Barton Hotel in Barton, Vermont. This was mailed
from Derby Line, Vermont to Andover, Maine on September
25, 1911.
Great
Falls in North Troy, Vermont
- This postcard is a picture
of the North Troy falls which for years and still
provides a location of swimming and diving pleasure. This
picture is different then I remember as a teenager but in
general is the same. This was mailed from North Troy to Newport,
Vermont on October 8, 1900.
Derby
Line Hotel in Derby Line, Vermont
- This postcard is of a hotel
in Derby Line which in my memory have not a clue as to
where it was located. The architecture style of this
building I found interesting. It is a cross between
Federal, Gothic and a little Victorian in the cornish
work. This was mailed from Derby Line to East Peppered,
Mass. on September 13, 1911.
Newport, Vermont
Main
Street Looking East.
